Aetna coverage
Aetna dietitian coverage, explained.
WebRD Dietitians is in network with Aetna. Most Aetna plans cover visits with a Registered Dietitian as preventive care. Aetna asks for a referral or order from your doctor, and we help you get it in place.

What's usually covered
How Aetna covers nutrition visits.
Most commercial Aetna plans (the kind you get through work or buy yourself) cover visits with a Registered Dietitian as preventive care. When you see an in-network dietitian, that often means $0 out of pocket.
Aetna's written nutrition counseling policy covers preventive visits for adults with obesity (a BMI of 30 or higher), and for adults who are overweight (a BMI of 25 to 29.9) and also have a heart disease risk factor, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or prediabetes. If you are overweight without one of those, Aetna may apply your deductible or coinsurance. We find out before your first visit and tell you.
Visits for medical reasons, such as diabetes, digestive conditions or kidney disease, are covered under your medical benefits, so a copay or deductible may apply. Visit limits vary by plan, and we confirm yours.
We bill in network for clients in Georgia, Florida, California and Pennsylvania, in person at our Alpharetta and Buckhead offices or by secure video.
Before your first visit
What you need, and what we handle.
What to have ready
- Your Aetna card, front and back
- A referral or order from your doctor (MD, nurse practitioner or physician assistant). Aetna requires it for every client.
- Your doctor's name and office phone, so we can follow up if needed
Doctors can send referrals through our physician referral page.
What we check for you
- Whether nutrition visits are covered as preventive care, medical care, or both
- How many visits your plan covers each year
- Any deductible, copay or coinsurance
- Whether you need a referral
- Whether video visits are covered the same as office visits
Plans that work differently
Not every Aetna plan is the same.
Aetna Medicare Advantage
If your card says Aetna Medicare or Medicare Advantage, Medicare rules apply, not the commercial Aetna rules above. Nutrition visits are covered for diabetes and kidney disease with a doctor's referral.
Aetna Senior Supplemental
An Aetna Medicare supplement plan (such as Plan G) sits behind Original Medicare. It follows Medicare rules and does not add nutrition coverage. See our Medicare dietitian coverage page for what Medicare covers.
Video visits
Video coverage can differ from office visit coverage, so we confirm it when we check your benefits. You can see Emily Razza, Jackie Warren or Melissa Logan by video.

Questions
Aetna questions.
Does Aetna cover a dietitian?
Most commercial Aetna plans cover dietitian visits as preventive care, often at $0. We check your plan and tell you your cost in writing before your first visit.
Do I need a referral with Aetna?
Yes. Aetna requires a referral or order from your doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant before nutrition visits are covered.
Will I pay anything if I'm overweight but not obese?
You might. Aetna covers preventive nutrition visits for overweight adults who also have a heart disease risk factor, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or prediabetes. Without one, your deductible or coinsurance may apply. We tell you first.
I have Aetna Medicare. Do these rules apply?
No. Aetna Medicare Advantage and Aetna supplement plans follow Medicare rules, which cover diabetes and kidney disease with a referral.
Does Aetna cover video visits with a dietitian?
We confirm video coverage when we check your benefits, since it can differ from office visit coverage.
