What's usually covered
How UnitedHealthcare covers nutrition visits.
Most UnitedHealthcare and UMR plans cover visits with a Registered Dietitian. Many cover them as preventive care, which often means $0 out of pocket when you see an in-network dietitian like us.
UnitedHealthcare's preventive nutrition benefit is aimed mainly at two goals: weight management and preventing heart disease, such as care for high blood pressure or high cholesterol. If one of those is why you are coming in, your visits are often covered with no cost to you.
Visits for some medical reasons, such as diabetes or prediabetes, are often billed under your medical benefits instead. That can mean a copay or deductible applies. We find this out before your first visit, so the cost is never a surprise.
We bill in network for clients in Georgia, Florida, California and Pennsylvania, in person at our Alpharetta and Buckhead offices or by secure video.
Before your first visit
What you need, and what we handle.
What to have ready
- Your UnitedHealthcare or UMR card, front and back
- The name of the person the plan is under, if it isn't you
- A referral is usually not needed. If your plan is an HMO, we'll tell you if one is required.
What we check for you
- Whether nutrition visits are covered as preventive care, medical care, or both
- How many visits your plan covers each year
- Any deductible, copay or coinsurance
- Whether you need a referral
- Whether video visits are covered the same as office visits
Plans that work differently
Not every UnitedHealthcare plan is the same.
UMR and employer plans
UMR runs health plans for many employers. These plans are set up by your employer, so nutrition benefits can vary a lot from one company to the next. That is why we check your plan, not just the name on the card.
Medicare Advantage plans from UnitedHealthcare
If your card says Medicare Advantage or AARP Medicare, Medicare rules apply. Nutrition visits are covered for diabetes and kidney disease with a doctor's referral. See our Medicare dietitian coverage page.
Video visits
Video visits can be covered differently from office visits, so we check this as its own question. You can see any of our three dietitians by video, including Melissa Logan, who sees clients virtually.

Questions
UnitedHealthcare questions.
Does UnitedHealthcare cover a dietitian?
Most UnitedHealthcare plans do, often as preventive care for weight management or heart health. We check your plan and tell you your cost in writing before your first visit.
Do I need a referral with UnitedHealthcare?
Usually not. Some HMO plans may require one, and we'll tell you if yours does when we check your benefits.
Is UMR the same as UnitedHealthcare?
UMR is part of UnitedHealthcare and runs plans for many employers. We are in network with both. Because employers set up UMR plans, benefits vary, so we check yours.
Will I pay anything for diabetes or prediabetes visits?
You might. On many UnitedHealthcare plans these visits fall under medical benefits, where a copay or deductible can apply. We tell you before your first visit.
Does UnitedHealthcare cover video visits with a dietitian?
Video coverage can differ from office visit coverage, so we confirm it as part of checking your benefits.
