What's usually covered

How Cigna covers nutrition visits.

Most Cigna PPO plans cover visits with a Registered Dietitian as preventive care. For many people, that means $0 out of pocket when you see an in-network dietitian like us.

Cigna plans can count first visits and follow-up visits differently, and some set a yearly limit. When a visit goes past a preventive limit, or is billed for a medical reason, your deductible or coinsurance may apply. We check how your plan counts visits before you start.

Some Cigna plans also treat office visits and video visits differently. We ask about both, so you can choose what works for you.

We bill in network for clients in Georgia, Florida, California and Pennsylvania, in person at our Alpharetta and Buckhead offices or by secure video.

Before your first visit

What you need, and what we handle.

What to have ready

  • Your Cigna card, front and back
  • Whether your plan is a PPO, HMO or EPO, if you know
  • HMO plans: a referral from your primary care doctor on file before your first visit

What we check for you

  • Whether nutrition visits are covered as preventive care, medical care, or both
  • How many visits your plan covers each year
  • Any deductible, copay or coinsurance
  • Whether you need a referral
  • Whether video visits are covered the same as office visits

Plans that work differently

Not every Cigna plan is the same.

HMO plans

Cigna HMO plans need a referral on file for nutrition visits. HMO plans also usually cover only providers inside that HMO's network, so we confirm we are in network for your exact plan before you book.

Employer and EPO plans

Some Cigna plans are set up by employers, and EPO plans can have limited nutrition coverage or none at all. This is why we check your plan, not just the Cigna name.

Cigna Medicare plans

If you have a Medicare plan through Cigna, Medicare rules apply. Nutrition visits are covered for diabetes and kidney disease with a doctor's referral. See our Medicare dietitian coverage page.

Where you can be seen

In person with Emily Razza or Jackie Warren, or by video with any of our three dietitians.

Questions

Cigna questions.

Does Cigna cover a dietitian?

Most Cigna PPO plans cover dietitian visits as preventive care, often at $0. We check your plan and tell you your cost in writing before your first visit.

Do I need a referral with Cigna?

PPO plans usually don't need one. Cigna HMO plans need a referral from your primary care doctor on file.

Is there a limit on visits with Cigna?

It depends on your plan. Some plans limit preventive visits each year, and visits past that may go toward your deductible. We confirm your limit first.

Does Cigna cover video visits with a dietitian?

Some Cigna plans treat video and office visits differently. We check both when we verify your benefits.

I have a Cigna Medicare plan. What's covered?

Medicare rules apply: nutrition visits are covered for diabetes and kidney disease with a doctor's referral.
